SUPER cylinder!!

Thanksgiving is just around and time could not be flying any faster. My little firsties are learning about 3D shapes. This is something new to most of them. Of course the cone, cube and pyramid are the popular shapes that are quick for them to commit to memory.

We have been discussing all of the things these shapes can do and after many discussions "we" came to the discovery that the cylinder must be super! It can stack, roll and slide!! We decided it was SUPER cylinder and he can do all things.
Once we discussed this, the students could not stop smiling and OF COURSE doodling little pictures of this hero that can do it ALL!!!!

They even decide that the other shapes could be the villains of the story.
They are too cute!!!
Tomorrow we are going to color these little posters to remind us of all we learned!! Feel free to pick up your free copy HERE!
Hope you enjoy!!

Turkey of 10's

We have been working on my Gobble It Up Math and Literacy Packet. Today, we did a fun math craftivity. The students were given 6 turkey feathers and they had to figure out 6 ways to make 10. They wrote each addition sentence on a feather to make a turkey of 10!

After they completed the feathers, I gave them a "bald" turkey and they got to "make him warm".  They loved this part of course!!!

They turned out super cute! After they worked on that they complete the "How can I make..." sheet for the other numbers.
It was such a fun way to practice this concept and they will definitely remember it. I will be able to reference the Turkey of 10's all year long.

These pages are available in my TPT shop along with all sorts of other fun Thanksgiving activities. Including my Gobble It Up Math and Literacy Packet.

Tootsie Spaces

For some reason I woke up in the middle of the night with this crazy idea that I HAD to try! Not sure why!?! I thought 'I need to find a way to motivate my some of my firsties to write with spaces between their words.' And who knows why but I decided to forget finger spaces, popsicle sticks, pencil and every other thing I had tried! I HAVE TO use tootsie rolls.

And let me tell you, it was quite the motivator! I told my kiddos that when they finished their writing I would come around with my own tootsie roll. If I could fit my tootsie roll in all of their spaces, they could eat a tootsie roll. I know some of you are judging me right now buuuuut it was really so much fun to see their excitement about spaces and this tiny treat. Also, it totally worked(for most)!

Already excited for Christmas??????
Also, this is a thanksgiving packet I made and is now in my TPT store! Check it out! I will be posting more with photos of the activities later!

Election Fun!

Halloween took all of our love and affection for a good portion of October, which I adored! BUT now that it is over, we have had a chance to leave our candy brains behind and give attention to another topic.

THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION!!!

Let me tell you, this has been SO fun! This is the first time these littles are probably going to remember an election. A few weekends back a 2nd grade teacher friend and I were at a relaxing cabin weekend and decided to make an election unit. So here goes...

We have been using our Time for Kids to learn about the candidates. And we watched a video from Scholastic with small bios about them. We learned about their birthday, family, favorite foods, and sports. All the important stuff :) Then the kiddos filled out one of these papers to show me what they learned and I was a happy little teacher to say the least!
I love the drawings here!

"Love you" for both--too sweet
You can get a FREE download of this candidate paper HERE!

Our school did an early mock vote using an online site so we needed to learn about the candidates quickly. Once we finished that, we began to discuss what they would do if they became president. They wrote a little something and then created these ADORABLE signs that were inspired by THIS!!!

Ok, I am off to enjoy my weekend!

All Things Spooky

We really went into Halloween overload this week. I can't lie, I kinda love it. My school does it up right. All school Halloween Bash, class Halloween parties and best of all A HALF DAY!!! woot woot! So you can take a "nap" before trick or treating, of course!!

I was......drum roll please....
A GUMBALL MACHINE.

Anyways on to the school stuff. We did a writing activity based on Cara Carroll's idea!

Trick or Treat, smell my feet. Guess who is hiding under the sheet!!!

We also did a graph to see who was afraid of spiders(free from HERE). It seems like I have many brave little kiddos! We even did the frankenstein and pumpkin hundreds chart from HERE and HERE. The kids can not get enough of those hundreds chart pictures!

The next day, I gave the kids some homework of a candy graph. They were loving it!!

Our class party was CRAZY the kids brought TONS of treats.

These are the LEFTOVERS. Yes, just the leftovers. There were 74 cupcakes, 40 cookies and 6 dozen juice boxes LEFTOVER. Each kid had their fill for sure!

Next time election madness!

Problem Solving Singapore Galore

My firsties have just finished addition and subtraction of # 1-10. So we have been reviewing all the ways to solve a problem. I got the anchor chart idea from The Inspired Apple. I just put together the ones we have gone over.

(Forgive me. I am obviously not a photography major considering I cut off the top and nearly the bottom. Yikes!) Then I told them math stories and their job was to use one of the strategies to solve the problem. These kids rocked, I caught them doing almost all of the different strategies without any problem :) The proof is below!

So exciting!!
Next time, some spooky business!!!

Welcome to First Grade!

So I am a bit late to the blog party but better late than never.... Anyways, wanted to share with all of you some classroom pictures. Who doesn't love classroom pictures, RIGHT????
Front of the class. You can even see some of Cara Carroll's schedule cards from First Grade Parade that she is sweet enough to give away for FREE!!! I mean absolutely FREE. I am obsessed with her blog and check it every night sometimes :).

I hang the kiddos work up on this board. They each have a hot air balloon with a clothes pin and their name. It took me FOREEEEVER to come up with a saying to go with but I love "get carried away" and could not stop telling my co-workers about it! ***Please forgive the baby blue walls, it is an old school and has so many unique qualities :)***
Forgive the word wall, it is still learning some new words :)

The class meeting area with our class calendar. Soon I will be posting a calendar pack that we will add skills to and continue to challenge my little firsties' brains. So be on the look out!

Also have my first product in my TPT store!! WooHoo!!! It's FREE of course! Get it HERE

Be back in a couple days with more!!!
